The Virginia Climate Restoration Initiative at The University of Virginia explores the most effective and affordable paths to mitigating carbon emissions and restoring our climate.

Our work is driven by the fundamental question of whether Virginia can get to net zero carbon dioxide emissions, and the role and impact of carbon dioxide removal in accomplishing that goal.

Nature

We are studying what lands in Virginia can be used for forest restoration in Virginia and how much carbon they can store.

Technology

We are studying where in Virginia BECCS and DACCS are economically feasible.

Policy

We are studying whether current land use policy supports land uses and building practices that reduce or sequester carbon emissions or sequesters carbon.
